What happens to a betting withdrawal sent to an expired card?
When a betting withdrawal goes to a debit card that has expired, been replaced or been lost, what happens depends on the UK operator: some say it can still reach the bank account behind the card, while others return it to your betting balance or pay it another way after checks. Contact the operator first to update the payment method, and your bank only once the operator confirms the money has been sent.
What happens to a withdrawal sent to an old card?
A debit card is linked directly to your bank account,46 and a card payout pushes money to the account behind the card.47 So what usually matters is whether that bank account is still open. Operators publish different routes, and the outcome depends on which one you use.
It may still arrive. Sky Bet, Betfair and Paddy Power say a withdrawal to a lost or expired card is still processed, possibly more slowly, if you still have access to the account number and sort code the card relates to; if you do not, it should decline and return to your balance.82732 LiveScore Bet and Virgin Bet say a withdrawal to a card that is no longer active should still succeed while the linked bank account is open; if that account is closed, the money usually comes back to them within 30 days and is returned to your betting account.2343
Your bank may redirect it. BetVictor and talkSPORT BET say money sent to a method that is no longer valid is usually credited to a new or existing account with the same bank or provider, and that otherwise they can pay by Bankout, their bank transfer route, using details you supply.1438
Wait, then ask your bank. Unibet says to allow up to 5 working days because the withdrawal might still reach your account, then contact your bank with the amount and date of the transaction.40
Update the method first. BetUK asks you to contact its support before requesting a withdrawal if your original payment method has expired, been cancelled or is no longer active.12 William Hill says you need to update or add a payment method before withdrawing, and to contact its customer service to move a withdrawal to a newly added method.44 Matchbook asks customers whose card has expired or been replaced to contact it by live chat or email.24 Midnite says to update the payment method using its Change Payment Method process,25 which lists conditions including a balance below £3 and no open or unsettled bets.26
Replacement cards. If your bank has issued a direct replacement for an expired or cancelled card, Sky Bet, Betfair and Paddy Power let you edit the old card’s details in Manage Payment Methods.33 William Hill lets you update a debit card’s expiry date.45 LiveScore Bet says an existing payment method cannot be updated when details such as the expiry date change; the new card is added as a new method, and it says this matters for avoiding withdrawal restrictions under its net deposit system.22
Rules that involve a new deposit. Some operators’ published procedures need a deposit with the new card before it can receive withdrawals. BetVictor says you must deposit using a new card before you can withdraw to it.15 Coral’s UK terms, in the section on inactive accounts, say that where your payment method has expired you will have to deposit with a new method and then withdraw to it.18 These are the operators’ rules, not advice from BookiePayout. Rather than depositing again, ask the operator first whether it can pay your existing balance another way. bet365 says that where it cannot pay back to your previous deposit method, it pays by bank transfer.48 Smarkets asks customers to request a bank transfer from its customer service team.36
Proof the card was yours. Betfair cannot remove a card with outstanding net deposits until a direct replacement has been added or you have provided proof of ownership.9 BetUK says it may still need to verify that an expired or misplaced card belonged to you.13
The table shows what each bookmaker we cover says about expired and replaced cards, with its source.
| Bookmaker | What the operator says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| 10bet | If a debit card has expired but its linked bank account is still active, a withdrawal can still be made; 10bet may email to ask for proof linking the card and the bank account.2 | |
| bet365 | No specific rule for expired or replaced cards was found. If a withdrawal fails or the provider rejects it, the funds return to the bet365 balance and the customer is asked to check that the card or bank account is still active. If the deposit method is no longer accepted, bet365 directs the customer to withdraw by bank wire.34 | |
| Betdaq | If the registered payment method has expired or closed, customers can add a new method in their account (which requires a £1 deposit with it before withdrawing) or contact helpdesk@betdaq.com. Card expiry dates are updated by customer services. A card cannot be removed while it has net deposits, before expiry, or before KYC is complete.567 | |
| Betfair | If a withdrawal goes to a lost or expired card, it is still processed (possibly more slowly) if the linked bank account is still accessible; otherwise it should decline and return to the Betfair balance. A direct replacement card from the same bank can be edited in Manage Payment Methods; otherwise proof of card ownership is needed to remove a card with outstanding net deposits.89 | |
| Betfred | Not published in the pages we checked | |
| BetMGM UK | If the original payment method has expired, been cancelled or is no longer active, BetMGM asks customers to contact Support before requesting a withdrawal so details can be updated. Expired or lost cards may still need to be verified, for example with card history from online banking or a proof-of-ownership letter from the bank.1011 | |
| BetUK | If the original payment method has expired, been cancelled or is no longer active, BetUK asks customers to contact support before requesting a withdrawal so their details can be updated. Proof that an expired or lost card belonged to the customer may still be required, for example a card-history screenshot from online banking or a stamped document from the bank.1213 | |
| BetVictor | If the withdrawal method is no longer valid, BetVictor says the funds are usually redirected to a new or existing account with the same bank or provider; if the provider cannot process it, BetVictor pays by Bankout (BACS for UK GBP customers) using bank details the customer supplies. A new card, even with the same number, must be added and deposited with before it can receive withdrawals.1415 | |
| Betway | Not published in the pages we checked | |
| BoyleSports | An expired registered payment method is listed as a reason a customer cannot withdraw. The T&Cs say that if the existing card has expired, the customer may register the new card's expiry date regardless of balance.1617 | |
| Coral | The help centre has no dedicated article on expired cards. The UK T&Cs, in the inactive-accounts clause, say that if the payment method has expired the customer must deposit with a new payment method and then withdraw that deposit and the rest of the balance to the new method. Expired cards do not count towards the UK limit of three active payment methods.1819 | |
| Kwiff | Not published in the pages we checked | |
| Ladbrokes | For inactive accounts (no cash bets for 13 consecutive months), Ladbrokes tries to return the balance to the last known payment method. If that payment method has expired, or the balance is below the minimum withdrawal, the customer must deposit with a new payment method and then withdraw that deposit and the remaining balance to the new method. No general expired-card procedure for active accounts was found.2021 | |
| LiveScore Bet | An existing card cannot be updated: a replacement or re-issued card must be added as a new payment method and Live Chat asked to remove the old one, to avoid withdrawal restrictions under the Net Deposit system. A withdrawal sent to a card that is no longer active should still succeed if the linked bank account is open; if the account is closed, funds are usually returned within 30 days and re-credited.2223 | |
| Matchbook | If the deposit card has expired or been replaced, customers are asked to contact Matchbook by live chat or accounts@matchbook.com.24 | |
| Midnite | If a card has expired the customer must replace it using the Change Payment Method process; that process requires a balance below £3 and no open bets or unfinished casino rounds.2526 | |
| Paddy Power | If a withdrawal goes to a lost or expired card, it is still processed (possibly more slowly) if the linked bank account is still accessible; otherwise it should decline and return to the Paddy Power balance. A direct replacement card from the same bank can be edited in Manage Payment Methods; otherwise proof of ownership is needed to remove a card with outstanding net deposits. Customers should tell Paddy Power if a card is lost or stolen.272829 | |
| QuinnBet | In its UK dormant-account terms, QuinnBet says that if the last payment method has expired, the customer must deposit with a new payment method and then withdraw that deposit and any balance to the new method. The help centre lists an expired card as a reason a deposit may not be authorised. No general expired-card withdrawal rule was found outside the dormant-account context.3031 | |
| Sky Bet | If a withdrawal goes to a lost or expired card and the customer can still use the linked bank account, it is still processed but may take longer. If they cannot, the withdrawal should be declined and returned to the Sky Betting & Gaming balance. A replacement card from the same bank can be updated by editing the old card's details. A card from a closed account or a different bank needs proof of ownership before it can be removed.3233 | |
| Smarkets | If a card has expired and the replacement is from the same bank, the customer deposits with the new card and then removes the old one. If a card or account has been lost, stolen, expired or closed, support may ask for documents (bank statements for old and new methods, a photo of the card showing only the first 6 and last 4 digits) before allowing withdrawal to a new method. If the method the balance must go to has been removed, support can help, including by bank transfer.343536 | |
| Spreadex | A customer who no longer holds the deposit card can register a new card or ask to be paid by cheque or bank transfer.37 | |
| talkSPORT BET | If the withdrawal method has expired, the funds are usually credited to a new or existing card or account with the same bank. If the bank confirms they were not redirected, the customer should contact talkSPORT BET with the transaction details; if the provider cannot process the withdrawal, it is paid by Bankout (BACS for UK GBP customers). A replacement card must be added and deposited with before it can receive withdrawals.3839 | |
| Unibet | If a withdrawal was requested to an expired card, Unibet says to allow up to 5 working days because the funds may still arrive, then contact the bank. For a stolen card, if funds have not been credited, the transaction is reversed to the betting account once the bank reports the card stolen.4041 | |
| Virgin Bet | An existing card cannot be updated: a replacement or re-issued card must be added as a new payment method and Live Chat asked to remove the old one, to avoid withdrawal restrictions under the Net Deposit system. A withdrawal sent to a card that is no longer active should still succeed if the linked bank account is open; if the account is closed, funds are usually returned within 30 days and re-credited.4243 | |
| William Hill | If the registered payment method has expired, the customer must update it or add another method before withdrawing; expired debit card details can be edited in the deposit area. Moving a withdrawal to a newly added method requires contacting Customer Service. A balance below the minimum withdrawal can still be withdrawn in full.4445 |
Safe steps if your card has expired or changed
- Check before you withdraw. In the cashier, see which card a withdrawal would go to and whether it shows as expired. If it does, read the operator’s help page on expired cards or ask its support first.
- Update the card only through the operator’s own route, in your account’s payment settings or as its support directs. Never use another person’s card, even with their permission.
- If a withdrawal has already gone to the old card, check its status. If the operator shows it as sent, look at the bank account the old card was linked to.
- Allow the operator’s stated time. Timings differ by operator and are often counted in working days; the working-day calculator counts them around UK bank holidays.
- Ask the operator for a trace reference if it has not arrived. William Hill says you can request an Acquirer Reference Number (ARN) once at least 5 working days have passed since a card withdrawal was issued, or one full day for Visa Direct.1
- Then contact your bank with the amount, date and any reference, and tell the operator what your bank says. The withdrawal enquiry checklist lists the details to note.
Exceptions
- Lost or stolen cards. Tell your bank straight away. Paddy Power asks customers to inform it as soon as possible as well as their bank if a card is lost or stolen.29 Unibet says that if a withdrawal to a stolen card has not been credited, it is reversed to your betting account once the bank reports the card as stolen.41
- A new bank or a closed account. A card from a different bank is not a direct replacement. Sky Bet says that if you have switched banks or closed your account, you need to provide proof of ownership to have the old card removed.33
- Inactive accounts. Ladbrokes says that once an account is inactive it will try to cash out the balance to your last known payment method.21 If you stop using an account, keep its payment details current or withdraw your balance first.
When to contact the operator, and when your bank
Contact the operator before requesting a withdrawal to a card that has expired, if a withdrawal comes back to your balance, and if your bank confirms the money was not redirected. talkSPORT BET asks customers in that last situation to contact it with the transaction details so it can investigate.38
Contact your bank to report a lost or stolen card, to confirm whether the old card’s account is still open, and to trace a payment the operator says it has sent. Give both sides full details, including dates, times and amounts, and keep copies of what you send.49
Protect your card data. Never post or send a full card number, expiry date, security code or PIN in a chat, email or public post. If an operator needs a card image, send it only through its official secure channel and follow its instructions on hiding digits. BookiePayout will never ask for card details.
How to complain if the money does not reach you
Complain to the operator first and follow its complaints process; the business has 8 weeks from receiving the complaint to resolve it.49 If you are not satisfied with the result, the Commission says that after 8 weeks you can take the complaint to a free, independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider.50 The operator should tell you which provider to use and may give you a deadlock letter.50 Sky Bet, for example, names IBAS and eCOGRA as its approved ADR providers.51
The Gambling Commission does not resolve individual complaints about gambling transactions, including withdrawal problems, and cannot help you get money back.52 If you live in Northern Ireland, check the operator’s website for which licence and complaints procedure apply.53

BookiePayout is an independent publication. We cannot see your account or your bank account, trace a payment, contact an operator or bank for you, or recover money, and we are not a regulator or a dispute-resolution service.
