Why was my betting withdrawal declined?
A declined betting withdrawal in Great Britain has usually been refused before it was sent, cancelled by the operator, or returned after a bank, card issuer or e-wallet rejected it; operators such as bet365 and QuinnBet say returned money goes back to your betting balance. The usual causes are a name that does not match the account holder, a destination that will not accept gambling payouts, and closed-loop rules that send withdrawals back to the method you deposited with.
Declined, pending, cancelled or returned: what is the difference?
Operators and banks use these words loosely. Working out which one applies tells you where the money is and who can explain it.
| Outcome | What has happened | Who can explain it |
|---|---|---|
| Pending or processing | The operator has the request but has not released the money | The operator |
| Declined at request | The cashier would not accept the request, for example for that method or amount | The operator |
| Cancelled | The operator stopped a request it had accepted | The operator |
| Returned or rejected | The operator sent the money, but the bank, card issuer or e-wallet refused it | The operator first, then your bank or provider |
bet365 says a cancelled withdrawal is credited back to your bet365 balance, and that a withdrawal rejected by your payment provider after bet365 processed it is sent back, credited to your balance and followed by an email with more information.1 QuinnBet says that if your bank rejects a withdrawal, the funds go back to your account balance.55 A return is not always quick: LiveScore Bet says money sent to a closed bank account or with incorrect details can take up to 30 days to come back to it.77
If your withdrawal has not failed but is still waiting, see why a betting withdrawal is pending.
Why are betting withdrawals declined?
The name does not match the account holder
Operators pay withdrawals only to the person who holds the betting account. bet365’s terms say withdrawal payments can only be made in the name of, and to, the registered account holder.5 Coral’s UK terms say the same.34 Ladbrokes lists payment methods and bank accounts that are not in the account holder’s name among the reasons it may cancel a withdrawal.78
For bank withdrawals, bet365 says it runs a Confirmation of Payee check to confirm that the bank details match a personal account in your name.79 Confirmation of Payee is a UK account name-checking service, and to pay a personal account the payer needs the exact name registered to that account.80 Midnite asks customers to make sure the bank account is in their own name and matches their Midnite account details.81 E-wallets run their own checks too: paysafecard says a payout from a merchant can be declined if your first name, surname or date of birth differ between the two sites.82
If your name appears differently on your betting account and your bank account, for example after a change of name, tell the operator and ask how to update it.
The destination will not accept the payment
Some destinations cannot receive a payout from a betting operator. bet365 only pays debit card withdrawals to cards registered in the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey.83 It also asks customers to check that their card or bank account is still active and able to receive funds from an online betting operator.1 Midnite says Wise does not accept funds back from gambling operators, so withdrawals to a Wise card fail, and Midnite then offers Pay by Bank instead.84 LiveScore Bet notes that some methods, such as prepaid cards, may only support deposits.45 paysafecard says not every merchant supports payouts to a PaysafeCard account.85
A card that has expired, been replaced or been cancelled is covered in withdrawals to an expired card.
Closed-loop rules send money back to the deposit method
Many bookmakers run a “closed loop”: a withdrawal goes back to the method you deposited with, at least up to the amount deposited, before anything can go elsewhere. Sky Bet says you must withdraw to each payment method at least the total deposited with it before withdrawing more by another method.58 It counts deposits made over the previous 150 days.57 Coral gives a worked example: with £100 deposited by Visa and £50 by PayPal, £100 must go back to the Visa card before more than £50 can go to PayPal.32 BetUK warns that a request to a different card, e-wallet or bank account may be delayed or cancelled.20 Midnite allows only one active payment method at a time.48
Where the deposit method cannot take a withdrawal, several operators publish another route. bet365 pays by bank transfer,6 and William Hill issues the withdrawal by Bank Transfer.74 Sky Bet points customers to Pay by Bank.86 Smarkets asks customers to request a bank transfer from its customer service team.87
The table shows each bookmaker’s published rule, with its source.
| Bookmaker | What the operator says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| 10bet | 10bet's terms say all withdrawals are processed back to the payment method used to deposit, and payment methods must be in the account holder's name. Where funds came from several financial accounts in the previous three months, 10bet splits the withdrawal proportionally between them after a risk assessment. Payment details for a withdrawal can only be added or changed by contacting support. Bank transfer is used when the deposit method does not support withdrawals.34 | |
| bet365 | Withdrawals are normally paid back to the method used to deposit. If the balance was funded by more than one method, the withdrawal may be split between them pro rata. Where payment back to the deposit method is not possible, or the method is no longer accepted, bet365 pays by bank transfer. Withdrawals can only be paid to the registered account holder.567 | |
| Betdaq | Withdrawals go back to the source of the deposited funds where possible. Customers must withdraw the amount deposited to a payment method before withdrawing to another. Where a deposit method cannot receive withdrawals, an alternative method is used after identity and address documents are provided.8910 | |
| Betfair | Betfair applies a closed-loop ('Net Deposits') rule: customers must withdraw to each payment method at least the total deposited with it before withdrawing to another method. Withdrawals generally go back to the account the funds came from. Betfair cannot show e-wallet net deposits online, and payment methods must be in the account holder's name.111213 | |
| Betfred | Betfred sends withdrawals to the card used to deposit and may ask for more information if that is not possible. A customer who declines to provide requested verification information can, where legally possible, withdraw the cash balance back to the payment method used to deposit. Payment methods must be in the account holder's name.141516 | |
| BetMGM UK | BetMGM operates a closed-loop policy: withdrawals must go back to the same payment method used to deposit, and a request to a different card, e-wallet or bank account may be delayed or cancelled. Payment methods must be in the customer's name; company accounts cannot be used, joint accounts can if the customer is a named owner. The terms say BetMGM may ask for alternative details where it cannot pay to the deposit method, and will not pay to a third party.171819 | |
| BetUK | BetUK operates a closed-loop withdrawal policy: withdrawals must go back to the payment method used to deposit, and requests to a different card, e-wallet or bank account may be delayed or cancelled. Where it cannot pay the deposit method, BetUK may ask for other payment details. Withdrawals are paid only to the registered account holder, never to a third-party method.202122 | |
| BetVictor | Withdrawals must go back to the main deposit method wherever possible. If that is not possible for reasons outside the customer's control, BetVictor will contact the customer about alternatives and a charge may apply. Payment methods must be in the account holder's own name; third-party, joint-account and business cards are not allowed.232425 | |
| Betway | Betway processes withdrawals back to the deposit method wherever possible, and only to accounts in the customer's own name. Where several accounts of the same type were used, it pays the one used most recently to deposit. If MasterCard, VISA or PayPal was used in the last month, those methods take preference, and if a processing partner only handles deposits Betway pays to another method. The terms say adding or updating withdrawal payment details is done through Customer Service (the help centre also describes an online route; see notes).262728 | |
| BoyleSports | BoyleSports operates a closed-loop policy: withdrawals go back to the method used to deposit, and any positive net deposit on each method must be cleared before withdrawing more to another method. Withdrawals may be split across several methods. Payment methods must be in the account holder's name.293031 | |
| Coral | Coral runs a 'Closed Loop System': withdrawals are returned to the methods used to deposit, in line with the amounts deposited, and may be split across several methods. Its example: with £100 deposited by Visa and £50 by PayPal, £100 must go back to the Visa card before more than £50 can go to PayPal. Card and PayPal withdrawals need a deposit with that method in the last six months. Payments can only be made to the registered account holder. UK accounts may have at most three active payment methods in a rolling 30-day period. Coral's Financial Service Department may change the method of a withdrawal request as a security precaution.3233343536 | |
| Kwiff | Kwiff runs a closed-loop policy: withdrawals go back to the card or payment account used to deposit, and the 'net deposit' (deposits minus withdrawals) on each method must be returned to that method before profits can be withdrawn to another active method. If returning funds to the original method is not possible, withdrawals may go to another verified method in the customer's name after extra checks. Third parties may not deposit or withdraw on the customer's behalf.3738 | |
| Ladbrokes | Ladbrokes operates a closed loop system: where possible withdrawals are paid back to the methods used to deposit, and a withdrawal may be split across several deposit methods (for example, card deposits must be returned to the card before an e-wallet can receive the rest). Withdrawals are paid only to the registered account holder, and the payment method chosen for a withdrawal may be changed by Ladbrokes as a security precaution. Separately, UK accounts may have at most three payment methods in use across a rolling 30-day period.3940414243 | |
| LiveScore Bet | A closed-loop Net Deposit system applies: funds must first be withdrawn back to each payment method with positive net deposits (deposits minus withdrawals per method over the last six months), which can split one withdrawal across several methods; once these are balanced the remainder can go to a method of the customer's choice. Payment methods must be in the customer's own name, and some methods such as prepaid cards may be deposit-only.444546 | |
| Matchbook | Matchbook operates a closed-loop policy: withdrawals return to the original deposit source. Where several methods were used, withdrawals go back to the deposit methods first, and within each method to the oldest deposit first. To withdraw to a new method, the customer must first make a small deposit with it, and Matchbook may question withdrawals to methods not previously used. Deposits must come from payment methods in the customer's own name.47 | |
| Midnite | Withdrawals can only be made to the registered account holder and only using the same payment method used to deposit. Only one payment method may be active at a time; to switch, the balance must be below £3 with no open bets or unfinished casino rounds. Payment methods must be in the customer's own name.484950 | |
| Paddy Power | Paddy Power applies a closed-loop ('Net Deposits') rule: customers must withdraw to each payment method at least the total deposited with it before withdrawing to another method. Withdrawals go back to the debit card used to deposit by default, and payment methods must be in the account holder's name. E-wallet net deposits are not shown online.515253 | |
| QuinnBet | Customers choose the withdrawal destination in the cashier, but any net deposit on a payment method must be cleared to that method before withdrawing to another card. QuinnBet reserves the right to pay withdrawals via the same method and currency used to deposit. Payment methods must be in the customer's own name.545556 | |
| Sky Bet | Sky Bet operates a 'Net Deposit' rule. Customers must withdraw to each payment method at least the amount deposited from it (over the previous 150 days) before withdrawing to another method. Once net deposits on every method are zero or below, extra funds can go to any registered method. Payment methods must be in the account holder's name. A payment method that does not accept withdrawals can be bypassed by withdrawing via Pay by Bank.575859 | |
| Smarkets | Smarkets runs a closed-loop system: funds go back to the method used to deposit. Net deposits (deposits minus withdrawals) are tracked per method, and positive net deposits on each method must be cleared before more than the deposited amount can be withdrawn to a preferred method. The withdrawal page shows the maximum allowed per method.26061 | |
| Spreadex | Card withdrawals must go back to the card used to deposit. Pay by Bank withdrawals require an earlier Pay by Bank deposit. Third-party payments are not accepted; all payments must come from an account in the account holder's name.62 | |
| talkSPORT BET | Withdrawals must be made to the main deposit method; where possible all withdrawals go back to the original deposit method. Payment methods must belong to the account holder, including for joint and business cards.636465 | |
| Unibet | Withdrawals can only go to a payment method used to deposit; the withdrawal page shows only the methods available to the customer based on previous use, and customer service cannot change this. A withdrawal may be split across several previously used deposit methods. All payment methods must be in the account holder's name.6667686970 | |
| Virgin Bet | A closed-loop Net Deposit system applies: funds must first be withdrawn back to each payment method with positive net deposits (deposits minus withdrawals per method over the last six months), which can split one withdrawal across several methods; once these are balanced the remainder can go to a method of the customer's choice. Payment methods must be in the customer's own name, and some methods such as prepaid cards may be deposit-only.717273 | |
| William Hill | With one registered payment method, withdrawals go back to that method; if it cannot receive withdrawals, the money is sent by Bank Transfer. With several methods, the system sends money first to the method with the highest net deposit (deposited minus withdrawn), so a customer may have to withdraw to a card before an e-wallet. Card withdrawals must go to the card used to deposit. If no payment method is set up or it has expired, a method must be registered and deposited with before withdrawing.747576 |
What to do after a declined withdrawal
- Find the money. Check whether the amount is back in your betting balance, still pending, or shown as sent. Note the date, amount, method and any message on screen.
- Read the operator’s explanation. Check your account messages and registered email. bet365, for example, emails customers when a payment provider rejects a withdrawal.1
- Check the destination. Make sure it is in your own name, still open, and a type the operator pays out to.
- Check the closed-loop amounts. Smarkets, for example, shows the maximum you can withdraw to each method on its withdrawal page.2
- Answer any open verification request through the operator’s official channel; see withdrawal verification.
- Ask the operator before trying again. If the cause has not changed, the same request may fail the same way. The withdrawal enquiry checklist lists the details to give.
Exceptions
- The operator changed the method. Ladbrokes says its Financial Service Department may modify withdrawals as an internal security precaution.43
- Promotion terms. Ladbrokes says the payout of free bets and marketing bonuses is subject to the promotion’s terms.78 talkSPORT BET asks customers to meet any wagering requirement before requesting a withdrawal.88
- Deposits not used. BetVictor says that if funds are deposited and not used before a withdrawal is requested, it may ask for verification documents and reimbursement of merchant charges.24
- A different method from your deposit. William Hill says withdrawing by a method different from your deposit method is one of the most common reasons it asks for documents.89
Do not try to get round a decline. Never use someone else’s card or bank account, even with their permission: QuinnBet, for example, says you cannot deposit with a third party’s card even if the cardholder agrees.56 Do not open another betting account or deposit again in the hope of releasing a withdrawal. Ask the operator what it can do with the balance you already have.
When to contact the operator, and when your bank
Contact the operator first in almost every case. It decides where a withdrawal can go and can see why it failed. Contact your bank or e-wallet provider when the operator confirms the money was sent and then rejected, and ask the provider why it refused the credit.
Use only the contact routes on the operator’s own website or app. The Commission advises giving full details, including dates, times and amounts, and keeping a copy of everything you send.90 Never share passwords or full card numbers in a chat or email.
How to complain about a declined withdrawal
Complain to the operator first and follow its complaints process.90 The business has 8 weeks from receiving your complaint to resolve it.90 William Hill, for example, offers an internal second review and says it resolves complaints within 8 weeks.91
If you are not satisfied with the result, the Commission says that after 8 weeks you can take the complaint to a free, independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider.92 Use the one your operator names: William Hill offers external adjudication through IBAS,91 while LiveScore Bet has appointed eCOGRA.93 ADR providers will not accept complaints about a customer service issue on its own.92
The Gambling Commission does not resolve individual complaints about gambling transactions, including withdrawal problems, and cannot help you get money back.94 It records complaints, and information suggesting a breach of its rules can inform regulatory action.94 If you live in Northern Ireland, check the operator’s website for which licence and complaints procedure apply.95
