Why am I being asked to verify before a betting withdrawal?
Operators licensed in Great Britain must verify your name, address and date of birth before you can gamble, and Gambling Commission rules say a withdrawal request must not trigger demands for information the operator could reasonably have asked for earlier. Later checks can still be legitimate, for example for anti-money-laundering or source-of-funds reasons, so answer a genuine request only through the operator’s official, logged-in channel.
What do the rules say about verification and withdrawals?
Operators licensed in Great Britain must verify your identity before you are allowed to gamble, including at least your name, address and date of birth.94 That minimum has applied since 7 May 2019.95 Before you deposit, the operator should tell you what identity documents or other information it may need, in what circumstances, and how to provide them.94
Many checks happen electronically, against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll; if that is not enough, you will be asked for copies of documents.96 The Commission does not give a timescale for ID checks: electronic checks may be instant, and document checks may take longer.96 An operator cannot confiscate your money because you did not prove your identity within a certain time.97
Information that could have been asked for earlier
The key rule for withdrawals is licence condition 17.1.1. A request to withdraw must not result in a requirement for additional information as a condition of withdrawal if the operator could reasonably have requested that information earlier.94 The Commission’s consumer guide says an operator that delays a withdrawal because of insufficient ID may be in breach of that condition and may face regulatory action.96
Legitimate later requirements
The same condition does not stop an operator asking, at the point of withdrawal, for information it must obtain at that time because of another legal obligation.94 The Commission describes checks that can come later in the life of an account:
- Anti-money-laundering checks. If an operator needs more information before you can withdraw, for example for anti-money-laundering checks, it should ask promptly and not only when you want to withdraw.96
- Source of funds. Operators may ask for bank statements to check that your source of funds is legitimate, and may ask about things that explain irregular income, such as a pending house sale.96
- Suspected fraud. An operator may ask for a selfie if it thinks there may be fraudulent activity on your account.96
- Financial vulnerability checks. Since 28 February 2025, most remote operators must run a financial vulnerability check when a customer’s deposits minus withdrawals exceed £150 in a rolling 30-day period.98
Whether a particular request is fair depends on facts that only you and the operator can see. The rule gives you a fair question to put to the operator: could this have been asked for before?
What bookmakers publish
Operators’ terms commonly make completed checks a condition of withdrawal and warn that a delay in supplying requested information may delay it; bet365’s terms are one example.8 Published review times vary:
- Sky Bet lets new UK customers deposit up to £1,500 in their first 30 days but allows no withdrawals until the account is fully verified.70 It aims to review documents within 4 hours, sometimes up to 24, and its team works between 7am and 2am.72
- Coral aims to review and process documents within 36 hours.40
- Unibet says documents are usually reviewed within 1–3 working days (up to 72 hours), and the withdrawal is processed once they are approved.82
- BetVictor gives around 24 hours for age verification and up to 72 hours for additional checks, and says weekends and public holidays may extend this.29
- William Hill says the most common reasons it asks for documents at withdrawal are withdrawing by a different method from your deposit, using a bank card that is not yours, and a period of account inactivity.90
- Smarkets must authenticate the identity of anyone withdrawing over £1,450. If it cannot verify your identity within two weeks of a withdrawal request, the request is cancelled and the funds go back to your account.75
The table sets out what each bookmaker we cover says about verification, with its source.
| Bookmaker | What the operator says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| 10bet | 10bet's terms say it may restrict an account, including preventing withdrawals, until its verification checks are complete, and that delays in providing requested information may delay withdrawals. It runs electronic checks first and may then ask for ID, proof of address, proof of payment-method ownership or source-of-funds documents. Documents are usually checked straight away, with manual checks taking 24-48 hours.345 | |
| bet365 | bet365 says an account must be fully verified before any withdrawal. The terms make withdrawals conditional on completed Verification Checks, and say delays in supplying requested information may delay withdrawals. Additional documents can be requested at any time; the help page gives no fixed review time.678910 | |
| Betdaq | Betdaq says customers may not deposit or bet until their details are verified, and missing documents can delay deposits and withdrawals. Withdrawals are made once the account is fully verified, and proof of identity and address may be requested first. During the closure, identity or source-of-funds checks may be carried out before a withdrawal is processed.11121314 | |
| Betfair | New UK customers may deposit up to £1,500 in the first 30 days, but no withdrawals are allowed until the account is fully verified. Withdrawals can be delayed until verification checks are complete. Betfair aims to review submitted documents within 4 hours, though it can take up to 24 hours, and documents sent outside opening hours (7am to 2am) are reviewed when the team reopens.151617 | |
| Betfred | New customers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland cannot deposit or gamble until their age and identity are verified, usually electronically at registration. Betfred may ask for documents or source-of-funds information at any time. Until checks are complete it may restrict the account, including preventing withdrawals, and a delay in providing requested information may delay a withdrawal.181920 | |
| BetMGM UK | BetMGM's terms say verification checks must be completed before a customer can do certain things, including withdrawing funds. The withdrawal article says an account pending verification may affect withdrawals and requested documents should be uploaded and approved first. Uploaded documents are acknowledged automatically within 30 minutes and agent review usually takes up to 3 business days. BetMGM may also ask for proof that a payment method belongs to the customer, and for source-of-funds information.21222324 | |
| BetUK | Name, address and date of birth must be verified before a customer can deposit or gamble. Withdrawals depend on BetUK completing its checks, and delays in supplying requested information can delay a withdrawal. Document review by agents 'usually takes up to 3 business days'. Payment methods may also need proof of ownership.25262728 | |
| BetVictor | BetVictor may ask for proof of identity, proof of address, income evidence or payment-method evidence at any time. For UK accounts, restrictions (which can include withdrawals) may apply until verification is complete. Typical review times are about 24 hours for age verification and up to 72 hours for additional checks; weekends and public holidays may extend this. The GB terms say withdrawals require verification checks to be completed and that delays in providing requested information may delay withdrawals. Depositing and withdrawing without playing may trigger document requests and a request to reimburse merchant charges.293031 | |
| Betway | Betway says UK rules require it to verify all customers. It tries to verify electronically first; if that fails, proof of identity and address must be sent before funds can be withdrawn. Uploaded ID is approved by email, which Betway says can take up to 24 hours. Its terms add that identification documents may be required before a payment is made, which may cause a delay.32333435 | |
| BoyleSports | BoyleSports may ask for proof of age, address, bank account and card copies at any time. If it cannot verify a customer, it may restrict deposits, withdrawals, betting and log-in. It may also ask for a bank statement or card copies if a withdrawal fails to process or is requested to a non-refundable method. It aims to verify documents within 6 hours of a clear submission.363738 | |
| Coral | Coral must verify UK customers' name, age and address (KYC) before they can deposit, bet or withdraw. Once KYC is complete, customers can withdraw winnings. Coral says it aims to review uploaded documents within 36 hours and may ask for more documents in later routine checks. Under the T&Cs, Coral may block withdrawals until verification checks are complete, and a delay in supplying requested information may delay a withdrawal. Source-of-funds checks may be required after a customer spends a certain amount.3940414243 | |
| Kwiff | Kwiff will not pay out until it has verified the customer's identity and age, and may request documents (including payment-method evidence) at any stage, which can delay deposits and withdrawals. It says withdrawals can trigger verification where money-laundering rules require it (it cites transactions over €1,000 occasional or €2,000 linked). Kwiff aims to review documents within 24 hours of receipt. It may close an account and cancel pending withdrawals if a customer cannot or will not supply required documents.44454647 | |
| Ladbrokes | UK customers must have their name, age and address verified (KYC) before they can deposit, play or withdraw. Ladbrokes aims to review uploaded documents within 36 hours. Further documents may be requested later during routine checks, and withdrawals may be restricted until requested verification is provided. The UK terms allow withdrawal only once verification checks are complete, and say delays in supplying requested information can delay withdrawals.4849505152 | |
| LiveScore Bet | LiveScore Bet treats account verification as a legal requirement and may ask for documents verifying date of birth, address or payment method, including a copy of the payment method used when withdrawing. Withdrawals are blocked while documents are unverified or KYC checks are pending, and the T&Cs allow payment to be withheld until age, identity and anti-money-laundering checks are complete. Submitted documents are aimed to be reviewed within 24 hours; source-of-funds reviews by the compliance team aim to reply within five working days, and declining may lead to account restrictions.5354555657 | |
| Matchbook | Accounts must be verified before any withdrawal is authorised. Matchbook tries to verify electronically and otherwise asks for photo ID and proof of address. No withdrawals are processed from unverified accounts, and funds may be held if documents are not provided in time. Further documents, including source of wealth evidence or documents for a bank wire after a large win, may be requested later, and failure to provide them can lead to account restrictions.585960 | |
| Midnite | Midnite runs verification checks (age, identity, address, location, financial circumstances, source of funds) at registration and may repeat them at any stage, including when deposit or withdrawal thresholds are reached. Until checks are completed it restricts the account and can prevent withdrawals; any delay in supplying requested documents may delay a withdrawal. Accepted documents include passport, driving licence or national ID, and a utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement dated within three months; a bank-issued card confirmation letter may be requested.61626364 | |
| Paddy Power | New UK customers may deposit up to £1,500 in the first 30 days, but no withdrawals are allowed until the account is fully verified. Delays in providing requested information can delay withdrawals. Paddy Power aims to review documents within 4 hours, though it can take up to 24 hours, and documents sent outside opening hours (7am to 2am) are reviewed after reopening. A bank statement and photo ID are needed before the first bank transfer withdrawal.656667 | |
| QuinnBet | Withdrawals can be requested once QuinnBet has completed its verification checks; the help centre says the 24-hour processing time applies once all required verification documents have been submitted and approved. QuinnBet may ask for photo ID, proof of address, the front of the deposit card (middle 8 digits hidden) and source-of-funds documents, and may suspend or restrict the account until they are provided.16869 | |
| Sky Bet | New UK customers can deposit up to £1,500 in the first 30 days after their name, address and date of birth are verified. No withdrawal is allowed until the account is fully verified, and an unverified account is restricted after 30 days. Sky Bet runs electronic checks first and may then ask for documents. It aims to review documents within 4 hours, sometimes up to 24 hours. Documents are reviewed between 7am and 2am.707172 | |
| Smarkets | Accounts must be verified before withdrawals can be made. Most UK users are verified electronically after their first deposit; otherwise documents are requested and reviewed within 24 hours. The terms say a withdrawal request is cancelled and the funds returned to the account if identity cannot be verified within two weeks, and that identity is authenticated for withdrawals over £1,450 (smaller amounts may also be checked). Source of funds or wealth checks can lead to restrictions if not completed.737475 | |
| Spreadex | When an account is opened, Spreadex checks identity and may ask for photo ID and proof of address. It asks for employment details but says it will not contact the employer. No withdrawal-specific verification rule appears on the sports HTML pages; that detail appears to be in the Customer Agreement PDF, which could not be snapshotted.76 | |
| talkSPORT BET | talkSPORT BET may request proof of identity, proof of address, income evidence or payment-method evidence. For UK accounts, restrictions (which can include withdrawals) may apply until verification is complete. Most standard checks are said to be completed within 24 hours and additional checks within up to 72 hours. The GB terms make completed verification a condition of withdrawal and warn that delays in supplying information may delay withdrawals. If funds are deposited and withdrawn without being played, documents and reimbursement of merchant charges may be requested.777879 | |
| Unibet | Unibet says it is required by the Gambling Commission to verify customer details and may ask for further documents before a withdrawal, including proof of payment method and source of funds. Customers cannot deposit, withdraw or gamble until name, address and date of birth are verified, and withdrawals are held until requested documents are approved. Document review usually takes 1-3 working days (up to 72 hours) and Customer Support cannot speed it up.80818283 | |
| Virgin Bet | Virgin Bet treats account verification as a legal requirement and may ask for documents verifying date of birth, address or payment method, including a copy of the payment method used when withdrawing. Withdrawals are blocked while documents are unverified or KYC checks are pending, and the T&Cs allow payment to be withheld until age, identity and anti-money-laundering checks are complete. Submitted documents are aimed to be reviewed within 24 hours; source-of-funds reviews by the compliance team aim to reply within five working days, and declining may lead to account restrictions.8485868788 | |
| William Hill | Customers in the UK, Jersey and Gibraltar must have their account verified before their first deposit and bet. William Hill may ask for documents at withdrawal, most commonly when the withdrawal goes to a different method from the deposit, when a card belonging to someone else has been used, or after a period of inactivity. Every Bank Transfer withdrawal needs proof of the bank account and valid ID. Under the UK terms, withdrawals can be restricted until verification checks are complete, and delays in providing requested information can delay withdrawals. Failing to provide requested source-of-funds documents leads to a temporary suspension that restricts withdrawals.8990919293 |
How to respond to a verification request safely
- Check that the request is real. Open the operator’s app, or type its web address yourself, rather than following a link in an unexpected message, and confirm the request appears in your account.
- Read what is asked and why. If the reason is unclear, ask the operator through its help centre what the check is for and what will satisfy it.
- Send documents only through the operator’s official secure channel. That is usually the document upload in your account, or the route its help centre names. Never post documents, card images or account screenshots publicly, for example on social media, forums or review sites, and never give them to anyone offering to speed up a withdrawal.
- Share only what is asked for. If an operator wants a card image, follow its masking instructions: QuinnBet asks for the front of the deposit card with the middle 8 digits of the 16-digit number hidden.1 Never give anyone your PIN, the card’s security code or your online banking password. Open Banking Limited says that with open banking you will never be asked for bank login details, PINs or passwords by anyone other than your own bank.2
- Keep a record of what you sent, when, through which channel, and any reference number.
- Follow up through the same official channel if the operator’s published review time passes.
Exceptions
- Proof that a payment method is yours. BetUK may need to verify that the payment method you used is rightfully yours.28 LiveScore Bet says it may need to see a copy of the payment method you used when you withdraw.53
- Bank transfer withdrawals. Paddy Power asks for a bank statement and photo ID before your first Bank Transfer withdrawal.67
- Thresholds. Midnite may ask about source of funds when an account reaches certain deposit or withdrawal thresholds.62
- If documents are not provided. William Hill says that if requested source-of-funds documents do not arrive by the stated date, the account is temporarily suspended with restricted access, including to withdrawals.93 Betfred’s verification policy says a customer who declines to provide requested information can, where Betfred is legally able to allow it, withdraw their cash balance back to the deposit method via the verification screen or Live Chat.18
- Northern Ireland. The Commission does not regulate remote gambling provided in Northern Ireland, so the licence condition described above is a rule for Great Britain.99 Check the operator’s terms for how it handles checks for Northern Ireland customers. Betfred, for example, applies its age and identity check to new customers from both Great Britain and Northern Ireland.18
When and how to contact the operator
If you think an operator is asking at withdrawal for something it could reasonably have asked for earlier, say so in writing through its official support and ask why the information is needed now. The Commission’s guidance is that if you are unhappy about the information you have been asked to provide, you should contact the company directly.96 Give dates, times and amounts, and keep a copy of what you send.100
Your bank is not part of an operator’s checks. You only need it to obtain documents the operator asks for, such as statements, from your own online banking or branch.
How to complain about a verification delay
ID verification is one of the subjects the Commission lists for complaints to a gambling business.101 Complain to the operator first and follow its complaints process; the business has 8 weeks from receiving the complaint to resolve it.100
If you are not satisfied with the result, the Commission says that after 8 weeks you can take the complaint to a free, independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider, and the operator should tell you which provider to use.102 Coral’s UK terms say you may escalate externally to IBAS,42 while Virgin Bet has appointed eCOGRA.103
The Gambling Commission does not resolve individual complaints or help consumers get money back.104 It records complaints, and information suggesting a breach of its rules can inform regulatory action.104
What BookiePayout cannot do
BookiePayout is an independent publication. We cannot see your account, judge whether a specific request is justified, contact an operator for you or recover money, and we are not a regulator or a dispute-resolution service. Never send us identity documents, bank statements or card images.
